Background Information

More than 200 years ago, the people living in the 13 colonies of the “New World” declared themselves free from the government of England. After a long and difficult war, called the American Revolution or the Revolutionary War, the English government agreed to let the people in the colonies rule themselves. A new country, called the United States of America, was born. But now the people of this new country had another problem. They were free to form a wonderful, different government, but how would that look? The only form of government they knew was one in which a king ruled.
