Social Skills in Subjects Other Than Language Arts

Social skills training can easily be incorporated into all academic instruction. Diann Grimm offers these guidelines for curriculum-embedded lessons. Teachers can identify an activity in which to embed social skills. There will be an academic goal and a social skill goal. They also can determine the social skills necessary for instructional activities, such as:

Physical Education: Sports and Games
  • Giving Encouragement
  • Giving/accepting compliments
  • Giving/accepting constructive feedback
  • Taking turns
  • Taking responsibility

Science Experiments: Working together as a group

  • Listening to others
  • Following Directions
  • Waiting you turn
  • Sharing materials
  • Being responsible for task completion
