Art Class: Individual or Group Activities

  • Ignoring distractions
  • Giving/accepting compliments
  • Giving/accepting constructive feedback
  • Asking/accepting/giving help
  • Teaching tolerance

In other subjects social skills may be a part of classroom discussions and processes such as "Brainstorming." Students may practice:

  • Listening without judgment
  • Respecting others' opinions
  • Taking turns
  • Asking clarification questions

Ms. Grimm also suggests teachers purposely select a social skill and determine the sub skills required for the behavior. These would then be reviewed and perhaps written on a poster or cue sheet. Teachers may also:

  • Model the use of skills
  • Include role-plays, practicing in pairs or small groups
  • Give specific, positive feedback
  • Use generalization techniques

Students work cooperatively on a class project in art.
