Social Skills in an Alternative Programs

The teaching of social skills can easily be embedded into alternative programs, such as the remedial "Language!." Many stories provide "instructional moments" by introducing a topic for discussion that involves knowledge of a social skill. The J & J Readers provide settings in which a role play can be infused, such as visiting a sit friend, accepting defeat or working cooperatively. Additionally, Dr.Jane Fell Greene, recognizes the importance of learning idioms, especially for special needs students and English Language Learners. Below is a sample weekly plan, indicating times for teaching idioms and identifying social skills in the stories. Related role playing make logical extension activities.
