Social Skills in Alternative Language Arts Programs

Many students in general education and special education programs are learning language arts skills through alternative programs, such as Language! The stories in this program lend themselves to discussions about social skills as part of the extension activities of each lesson.

Below is a link to a weekly lesson plan developed by one of our special education teachers. Social skills instruction is folded into the language arts instruction. The role plays naturally reinforce the program's exercises in reading and writing.

It is interesting to note the emphasis that the Language! program places on idioms. The author recognizes that a knowledge of idiomatic expressions is critical for the comprehension of an language.
