Teachers may set the stage for teaching social
skills by the physical arrangement and content of their classrooms.
Seating arrangements and seating assignments may be adjusted
to the students needs. Desks in vertical rows, for example,
are less conducive to interactions between students. Desks
in circular configurations facilitate visual and verbal exchanges.
A teacher may wish to make a designated space
in the classroom for individual student relaxation or as a
conflict resolution center. If students are not getting along,
they can go to this special area of the room to complete forms
which will later serve as scripts for the mediation process.
Posters, made by the students regarding social
skills, can brighten any room as well as be reminders about
positive ways we interact with one another. Rules of conduct,
dress codes, etc. also serve as a statement of expectations.
Colorful commercial posters are readily available through
catalogs. A couple of providers have images of different facial
expressions conveying emotions.
