For Teachers Students Doing Research Report Resources Bats Out of Your House

Doug Prouty - Contra Costa County Office of Education

There are almost one thousand different species of bats. Each has unique features, sizes and food. Some fruit bats have a wing span of 6 feet. That would be like your dad holding his arms out. Other bats are as small as a bumblebee. Some live on fruits and nectars while others eat only flying insects. Insect eating bats use echolocation allowing them to use their ears to find food and navigate while flying. We still are amazed at echolocation and how it works.

Most bats sleep and hangout upside down. Mainly they are just misunderstood by most people and that makes them strange.

Why are bats so scary?
