Why
are bats portrayed as scary?
In the old days, bats were thought to be able communicate or talk to spirits. This, and the fact that they are night creatures, is why they are used at Halloween.
Most people don't know a lot about bats and have heard stories of them getting stuck in people's hair and spreading rabies. Bats have excellent navigation in the dark. Their echolocation would allow them to get around humans with no problem.
There are also a wide range of types. Many seem strange.
